Glass Doors for In-The-Wall Stacked Stone Fireplace - Project #11030
Customer Comments: We are looking at your standard door options (bungalow or savannah). Fireplace opening is 40” wide and 30 3/4” high.
Our Comments: The stock Bungalow and Savannah doors are designed to sit on a hearth, not for installation on a fireplace raised in the wall like yours. Although they can be attached, the frame cannot overlap the bottom of the opening, so they look a little out of sorts as if they are floating and something is missing. Normally we would design a door with a 4-sided frame that overlaps the bottom or a door that fits inside the fireplace. Keep in mind that your stone is not flat, so a door made to fit on the outside will have noticeable gaps between the frame and the stones. When doors are made to fit inside, those gaps can be filled with mortar and it looks very clean and finished.
Fireplace Opening: 40" W x 30 3/4" H

Stock Aluminum Doors
These doors are made to sit flat on a hearth. You can install them on a raised opening, but there is no frame at the bottom to overlap so they look a little odd. They are a lot less expensive, so the choice becomes more about the budget than the look.
Low End Aluminum Doors
Aluminum is an excellent material for fireplace doors because it does not rust and can handle high temperatures when treated with powder coated finishes. It is also the most affordable.
Medium Range Steel Doors
Steel doors are more substantial than the less expensive aluminum doors. They are heavy duty and rugged and are more customizable because the frames are laser cut.
High End Hand Crafted Wrought Iron/Steel Doors
Hand crafted doors take on a more rugged natural look for those who appreciate craftsmanship tasteful details.
High End Hand Crafted Solid Brass
These doors are hand crafted by skilled artisans from Solid Brass or Steel, depending on the finish that is desired. Very high end, and very refined. Items made from solid brass come in a wide variety of hand crafted patinas and other finishes. Satin Nickel finishes done on solid brass are the finest quality and will not rust like plated steel.
Mesh & Insulation Options
The Mesh options are behind the glass so you can burn the fire with the doors open and still have spark protection. Great for real wood or gas logs since most gas long manufacturers insist that you have a screen in front of the logs when they are burning. Mesh panel doors are the most popular and are best for when there are toddlers present because they will not open backwards whereas the mesh screens are easily pushed in. Insulation goes between the back of the frame and the fireplace facing, providing a better seal.
