These doors are designed to be burned open and can be closed temporarily to start the fire and be left closed as the fire dies out. If you want the benefit of efficiency glass doors offer but don't like the stark look of the glass, adding mesh in front of it obscures it where you cannot really tell there is glass when the door is installed, particularly if the inside of the fireplace is dark.
